Stage 6
Ritual and Monitoring
There are some general rules to follow when using herbs for the first time.
Start slowly
Herbs are generally gentle on your body but it is always advisable to start introducing them slowly. Begin with a low dose and monitor the effects for a few weeks.
Start simply
Don't overload your system with too many herbs at the start. Begin with a single herbal preparation and monitor how that herb works with you. Only start to combine herbs when you feel your body is ready for more.
Start a routine
Herbs work by supporting your body - which takes time - so don't expect miracles overnight! Create a routine to integrate and embed the herbs into your day to day life, and be patient. Only then will you start to reap the benefits.
Monitor carefully
Herbs can have subtle effects on your body so it is important to monitor and record any changes and benefits you experience. The best way to do this is with a simple herbal journal.
Any doubt - stop!
Unlike many prescription medications, you can simply stop taking herbs at any time. If you have any doubt or concerns then stop and monitor how your body feels without the herbs.
You are unique
What works for one person may not work for another but the beauty of herbs is that, with a little patience, you can explore and experiment until you find the combinations that work for you.
Using herbs safely and red flag symptoms
It is always advisable to seek professional medical advice before using any herbal or alternative natural products, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or diagnosed with a medical condition. Herbs work with your body's natural systems and some herbs can stimulate tissues causing existing medication to be absorbed and/or excreted at different rates, which could affect the clinical dosage.
RED FLAG symptoms appear suddenly, are severe and cannot be explained by any recent activity. If you experience any of these symptoms, then seek immediate medical attention and provide a list of the herbs you have been taking.
