There’s something wonderfully satisfying about biting into a crisp apple and they have so many health benefits. But at this time of year, we often have a glut of fruit that won't keep through the winter so ... we chop them up, freeze them, then turn them into amazing freshly squeezed apple juice for the rest of the year!
Unlike many commercial juices, freshly squeezed apple juice can be made without added sugar, sweeteners or unnecessary additives. It is simply our juice wrung out of the fruit, and provides vitamin C, potassium and plant compounds, including polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties.
A Natural Source of Antioxidants
Apples contain polyphenols such as quercetin, which help protect cells from oxidative stress. These naturally occurring compounds are one reason apples are often associated with a healthy, balanced diet.
Hydration with a Fruity Boost
Fresh apple juice has a high water content, making it a refreshing way to contribute to daily fluid intake. Its naturally occurring sugars also provide a quick source of energy.
Supporting Everyday Heart Health
Apples contain potassium, a mineral that contributes to normal muscle and nerve function and helps maintain normal blood pressure. Apple polyphenols are also being investigated for their potential role in cardiovascular health.
Fresh Is Best
Juicing makes it easy to consume the nutrients and flavour of several apples at once, but there is an important trade-off because much of the fibre is lost during juicing. Fibre is valuable for digestive health and helps slow the release of naturally occurring sugars. For everyday health, this means that whole apples are an excellent choice. However, freshly squeezed juice can be a delicious occasional addition — particularly when made from fresh, ripe apples and enjoyed alongside a balanced meal.
How To Prepare
Wash the apples, pat them dry, leave the skin on, chop into quarters and freeze in airtight freezer bags. To juice - remove from freezer and allow to defrost (the apples will look a bit brown and sorry for themselves) then simply use a fruit press to squeeze out all the goodness.
Sometimes wellness really can be this simple - fresh fruit, freshly squeezed, and enjoyed in its natural form.
